Sewanee Survives Rhodes Comeback in SAA Championship

Sewanee defeated Rhodes 10-9 in the conference championship

DANVILLE, Ky. (May 1, 2022) - The Rhodes Lynx fell one goal short of completing a miraculous turnaround of their season. After starting 0-9, the Lynx made it all the way to the SAA championship game on Sunday, where they fell to the #3 seed Sewanee Tigers 10-9. Rhodes finishes the season at 5-13.

The two teams played neck-and-neck throughout the entire first half. The Tigers struck first with a Luke Valentine strike two and a half minutes in to the game. Rhodes was quick to respond however, when David Hart scored on the very next possession to knot things up. Moments later, Valentine struck again, but once more the Lynx were quick to react. Sammy Carter knifed through the Sewanee defense to score an unassisted goal to even the count at two. Sewanee would add one more before the first horn to make it 3-2.

Carter, who only had four goals coming into this one, scored for a second time at the ten-minute mark of the second to tie the game for the third time. After a Sewanee goal at nine minutes, the two teams struggled to find a hole in either defense. Then, following a strategic timeout on the last possession of the first half, Ryan Dancy zipped a turnaround shot past the Tigers goal keeper on a feed from Liam Sullivan to tie the score at four heading into halftime.

Following the break, Sewanee came out ultra-aggressive. The Tigers scored three times in the first five minutes of the quarter to take a commanding 7-4 lead. After five minutes of back-and-forth, Rhodes finally broke through when Christian Cisneros hit a cutting Cole Hollander for a goal. Unfortunately, the Tigers would add two more scores of their own, and took a 9-5 lead into the final period.

Rhodes turned their intensity up on both sides of the field, and the aggression paid off. Liam Sullivan found the net a few minutes in to cut into the lead. Moments later, it was Jonathon Hazelhurt off a Cisneros feed to bring the Lynx within two. Rhodes won the ensuing faceoff and Dancy delivered his second of the day to make it a one score game with 8:47 to go. Valentine would break the hearts of the Lynx just two minutes later with his third goal of the game, giving Sewanee the 10-9 advantage. The Lynx scored once more on a Conor Casey strike, but could not find the equalizer in their arsenal. They had a one final possession with under a minute to go, but Sewanee forced a turnover and did not allow Rhodes to get a shot off.

Dancy and Carter each had a pair of goals to lead the scoring, while Cisneros chipped in with three assists. Brendan Roberts had another strong game, saving 19 shots and ending with a save percentage of 67%.
