MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (April 30, 2022) - Rhodes women's tennis stays alive for at least one more day following a thrilling 5-4 win over #2 seed Berry on Saturday at the SAA Championship.
The Vikings jumped out to a quick lead with an 8-0 win on doubles one. However, Rhodes was able to tie things up when
Emily Holderness and
Lea Letourneau captured the win on doubles two. The Lynx then clinched the doubles side of things when seniors
Kate McGough and
Julia Darkey outlasted Adelle Yanez and Emma Kruger 8-7 (7-3).
Berry tied things up when Allison Ivey took down
Esme Benjamin on singles one, 6-3, 6-0. Rhodes was able to bounce back by taking the next two points. On court six,
Julia Darkey defeated Ally Gray, 6-1, 6-3. Then on court three, the Lynx got their fourth point from Letourneau, who won 6-2, 6-4.
The last three matches were incredibly tight. On court two, Juliana Mascagni outlasted
Michelle Adan-Pol in three sets, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4. Then on court five, Lauren Masteller eeked past
Emma McHale in a wild one, 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7-5). With the score tied at four apiece, all the attention fell on fourth singles where
Emily Holderness faced Adelle Yanez. Holderness jumped out to an early lead with a 6-2 win in game one, but Yanez matched her in game two with a 6-3 win. In the deciding set, Holderness was able to hold off Yanez, winning 6-4 to give the Lynx the win.
It was sweet revenge for the Lynx, who fell to the Vikings 9-0 earlier this month. Their reward is facing the #1 seed, nationally-ranked Sewanee Tigers in Sunday's championship game.
