Lynx Put Up Twenty-Seven Runs in Saturday Split

Rhodes defeated Millsaps, and then fell to the Majors on Saturday afternoon

MOUNT BERRY, Ga. (April 30, 2022) - The Rhodes Lynx have been fighting for their postseason lives since Thursday, but it seems their run has come to an end following a split with the Millsaps Majors on Saturday afternoon. A win and a loss on the day move the Lynx to 26-18-1 on the season. The loss was their second of the SAA Tournament, removing them from conference championship contention.

Game One
Rhodes 25
Millsaps 10

For the third consecutive game, the Rhodes offense was on another level, scoring double digit runs in a win. The Lynx scored at least one run in seven of eight innings of offense, scored multiple runs in six of eight innings, and scored at least four runs in four different innings.

Millsaps actually held and early lead, scoring three in the top of the first. Rhodes responded with a field goal of their own, thanks to an error and a pair of sac flies. In the third, Millsaps again hung a three-piece on the Lynx, and again Rhodes answered back immediately. They got one back on an RBI groundout from Wood Kimbrough, and then tied it with two runs in the fourth on RBI from Peter York and Dante Messina

Millsaps again retook the lead in the fifth, but it would be the final time for this game. Starting in the bottom of the fifth, the Lynx scored five runs on five hits. In the sixth, they added five more runs on three hits, two walks, and a hit by pitch. In the seventh, four runs came across on four hits as the Lynx actually left the bases loaded. They wrapped up the offensive barrage in the eighth with five more runs on three hits and three hit batters. All three hit batsmen were brought in on a grand slam from Julien Brown. At the end of the four-hour affair, Rhodes had hung a season-high 25 runs on the Majors.

Eighteen Lynx stepped into the batter's box in this one, with ten of them recording a hit, thirteen of them scoring a run, and ten of them recording an RBI. Dante Messina, Ben Wilson, and Gunnar Vachris each had three hits. Ben Burkhart scored four times. Messina and Brown each tied for the team-lead in RBI with four.

The win was the first of the tournament for Millsaps, who had previously defeated Rhodes and Centre. That meant the two teams had to grab a quick break and lace em back up for a second game to see who would make the SAA championship game next week.

Game Two
Millsaps 7
Rhodes 2

Having played four games in three days, asking the Rhodes pitchers to suit up for a fifth game was a tall order. Millsaps was able to strike early against Lynx starter CJ Carron, who had also started the first game on Friday. Three singles and a sac fly gave the Majors a 2-0 lead after one. They would add another to their total with a home run in the third. The Lynx showed some life in the fourth when Vachris brought in Kimbrough on a sac fly. Unfortunately they would leave two men on base and do no further damage.

The only other run for Rhodes came in the sixth when Kimbrough scored on another sac fly, this time from Burkhart. Millsaps added runs in the seventh and ninth to make the final of 7-2.

The Lynx managed nine hits in the game, but they were all singles. In addition, they stranded seven men on base.

Rhodes may have an outside shot at an at-large bid for the NCAA tourney, with a resume that includes three wins over top-5 teams.
