Majors Upset Lynx in First Round

Millsaps defeated Rhodes 6-4 on Thursday afternoon

MOUNT BERRY, Ga. (April 28, 2022) - A late rally led to an upset win for the #6 Millsaps Majors over the #3 Rhodes Lynx in the first round of the SAA championship on Thursday afternoon.

After a quiet first inning, Rhodes took the lead in the second. Ben Wilson singled with one out, and moved to third on a Will Heurtin double. One batter later, Ben Burkhart brought Wilson in with a groundout to make it 1-0. The lead was short-lived however, as Millsaps responded with an RBI double in the top of the third to tie things up.

The Majors would take the lead one inning later. A walk and a wild pitch put a man in scoring position with one out. Mason Little then delivered a single to right that plated David Abbadessa to make it 2-1. Then, for the third straight inning, they added to their score with a sac fly in the fifth to make it 3-1.

Gunnar Vachris led off the bottom of the fifth with a double to the gap to spark a Rhodes rally. A groundout moved Vachris to third, followed by a walk and a stolen base from Peter York. With two in scoring position, the team's RBI leader, John McNair, came through as he has done all year with a two-run single to center to tie things up.

Unfortunately, Millsaps put a run on the board for the fourth straight inning in the sixth with a two-out, two-run double off the bat of Sam Pitre to retake the lead at 5-3. The would add one more in the seventh on an RBI single from Mason Little for their sixth run of the game. Rhodes scored once more in the game on a throwing error, but it would not be enough as they fell 6-4.

York and Wood Kimbrough had two hits each to lead the Lynx offense. Nick Ferazzi took the loss for the Lynx as the starting pitcher. His final line read five innings, seven hits, four runs, six walks and four strikeouts.

The Lynx will need to dig deep and go on a big winning streak to keep their season alive. They will play the loser of #2 Berry/#7 Centre at 3:30 pm EST tomorrow afternoon. If they win that game, they will then play the loser of #6 Millsaps/(winner of Berry/Centre) at 7:00 pm EST. Another loss for the Lynx at any point will be the end of their season.
