MEMPHIS, Tenn. (April 25, 2022) - The Rhodes Lynx will live to fight another day following their first-round defeat of the #5 seed Berry Vikings at Crain Field on Saturday. With the 19-10 victory, Rhodes moves to 4-12 on the season.
It was a tale of two halves in this one. Berry was the aggressor for much of the first and second quarters, outshooting the Lynx 29-17.
Brendan Roberts was strong in goal, however, allowing only six goals in the first half. Unfortunately, Rhodes only managed four of their own. They got one in the first quarter when freshman
Drew Downes got a good look off a feed from
Liam Sullivan. It would be almost a full quarter until the Lynx scored again. With Berry up 5-1, Downes flipped his role and fed
Ryan Dancy for the Lynx second score. Rhodes added goals from
Alexi Thomas (his first of the year) and
Conor Casey, taking a 6-4 game into the half.
Rhodes came out as an entirely new team in the third quarter. Playing in front of an energized home crowd, the Lynx offense went nuclear in the third scoring twelve goals.
Matt Leone carded a hat trick in the period and added an assist as well. Jonathon Hazelhurst and
Liam Sullivan each added two of their own, while
Christian Cisneros,
Conor Casey,
Alexi Thomas (man down),
Danny Brown and
Geist Pollock each scored once. By the end of the offensive barrage, it was 16-8 in favor of Rhodes.
Leighton Dickson and freshman defenseman
David Hart both scored in the fourth to give Rhodes 19 goals on the day.
It was a full team effort as twelve different Lynx found the net. Twelve of the nineteen goals were assisted, with Sullivan and
Drew Litner carding three dimes each. Roberts finished his day between the pipes with a 59% save percentage and 14 saves.
With the win, Rhodes advances to the second round of the SAA bracket. They will face #1 seed Centre in Danville, Kentucky on Friday, April 29 at 7:00 pm EST. Centre took the previous matchup between the two teams on April 8th, winning 11-4.
