SEWANEE, Tenn. (April 10, 2022) - It took two periods of extra time before the home team Sewanee Tigers were able to finish off the Rhodes Lynx in a thrilling SAA conference matchup. The loss moves Rhodes to 2-11 overall, with a 2-2 record in SAA play.
Sewanee jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first with their aggressive attack. Undeterred, Rhodes was able to chip away. Around the halfway point,
Liam Sullivan found the net for the first time in the game. A mere forty seconds later,
Ryan Dancy brought the Lynx within one with a goal of his own. After Sewanee added a fourth goal, the Lynx were able to finish the quarter with two more goals from
Conor Casey and
Christian Cisneros to tie the game up at the end of one.
Sullivan and Cisneros formed a dynamic duo in the second quarter. The pair connected two different times with Cisneros feeding Sullivan for a pair of goals. In addition, Rhodes received a goal from Jonathan Hazelhurst. Rhodes took a 7-6 lead into the locker room at halftime.
The third quarter saw Sewanee retake the lead as they netted the first two scores of the period. About halfway through the period, in a man-up situation, Rhodes was able to take advantage when Cisneros found
Matt Leone cutting through the middle for the equalizer. Moments later, Casey found himself with an open loo and ripped one past the Sewanee keeper to give Rhodes a one goal advantage, 9-8, heading into the fourth.
Keeping with the theme of the day, Sewanee came out strong to start the quarter. The Tigers scored three goals in a row in a matter of three minutes to stake a 11-9 advantage. Again, penalties would hurt the Tigers as they found themselves in another man-down situation. This time, Cisneros went from helper to scorer, making a handful of nifty moves to find space and sneak one between the pipes. Phelps Thomas scored for Sewanee less than a minute later, giving them a two-goal lead. Again, the resiliency of the Lynx was shown as they battled back. At the five-minute mark, Casey found
Drew Litner for a goal, pulling the Lynx within one. Three minutes later, Rhodes was able to use yet another man-up situation to their advantage. With the clock winding down, the Lynx turned up the attack and came through when leading scorer
Drew Downes ripped a missile into the back of the net to tie things up at the two-minute mark.
The first overtime period featured a pair of saves from both
Brendan Roberts and the Sewanee keeper, Greg Ix. The second overtime period saw the tables turn as Rhodes was flagged for slashing, giving Sewanee the extra man. Thirty seconds into the penalty, Luke Valentine beat Roberts for the game-winner.
Cisneros had five points on two goals and three assists. Sullivan netted a career-high three goals, moving his season total to 11. Roberts saved 13 shots in goal for the Lynx.
