PENSACOLA, Fla. (March 20, 2022) - The Rhodes Lynx ended their Florida spring break trip on a high note with a 6-5 win over the Grinnell College Squirrels on Sunday morning. The win moves Rhodes to 11-10-1 on the year while Grinnell falls to 2-2.
Grinnell got on the board in the top of the second, scoring a run on a wild pitch. Rhodes was quick to get the run back in the bottom half. Will Huertin was hit by a pitch to lead off, and proceeded to steal second. He was then brought in on a double from
Ben Wilson to knot the score at one. Luke Porter would score a second run for the Squirrels in the fourth, coming in on an Ian Brown fielder's choice.
The score would remain 2-1 until the bottom of the sixth. Heurtin singled to lead off, reached second on an error, and then third on a single from Wilson. After Wilson stole second base,
Bryce Anderson drove in Heurtin with a single to tie the game. Grinnell committed the second error of the inning a batter later, allowing Heurtin to come around. Grinnell handed Rhodes one more run in the inning when an errant throw from the catcher gave the Lynx their third unearned run of the inning and a 4-2 lead.
Wilson singled through the right side in the seventh to score
John McNair, who had also singled and stole second base. The back-and-forth affair continued in the eighth when a Jack Gillespie sac fly made it 5-3. The run would go back to the Lynx in the bottom half on a double from
Mitchell O'Berry that scored Anderson. In the ninth, trailing 6-3, Grinnell loaded the bases with no one out. A walk would drive in a run, followed by a sac fly to make it 6-5. Reliever
John Gibbs was able to buckle down and get the last two outs via strikeout, stranding the tying run just 90 feet away and giving Rhodes the 6-5 win.
Wilson ended up 4-4 at the plate, scoring once,driving in a pair, and stealing two bags. McNair pitched in with a 3-4 day at the plate.
The boys are back in Memphis this week, and will host Christian Brothers at Stauffer Field on Tuesday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 pm.
