Lynx Survive Shootout with Owls

Rhodes defeated Rowan 17-15 on Wednesday morning in Florida

SAINT LEO, Fla. (March 16, 2022) - The Rhodes Lynx extended their win streak to five games with an exciting, high-scoring 17-15 win against the Rowan Owls on the campus of Saint Leo University on Wednesday morning. The Lynx now stand at 7-2 while Rowan falls to 2-3.

Payton Bennett started the shootout with a goal 70 seconds in, and was joined two minutes later on the scoreboard by Baylee Barker. Rowan was quick to respond, however, with two goals of their own to knot the score at two. Rhodes response was to score five straight goals, with Barker, Izzy Parkers, Avery Burke, and Bennett twice finding the net to give the Lynx a 7-2 lead. Rowan showed fight, getting two goals back, but Barker snatched the momentum back for Rhodes with her third goal of the period 45 seconds before the first horn sounded. Rhodes led 8-4 after one.

The second quarter was the polar opposite of the first, with neither team finding the net until the two minute mark. There was a flurry of activity in those final 120 seconds though, as each team recorded a pair of goals to make the score 10-6 at the break. Barker and Burke were the scorers for the Lynx.

Julianna Corson put two past Lynx goalkeeper Emma Bradley to pull the Owls within two just two minutes in to the third. Once again, the Rhodes offense came to life to avenge the goals. Julia Dalessandro, Barker, Aidan Pike, Bennett, and Barker for the sixth time ballooned the Lynx lead to 15-8. Chloe Shea stopped the run for Rhodes with a goal for Rowan, but the Lynx were able to sneak two more in before the third horn, courtesy of Bennett and Carina Wesker. They led 17-10 after three.

Rhodes turned off the pressure in the fourth, and focused on playing defense. They did not score in the final frame, but Rowan did. The Owls scored one early, and then went on an eight-minute drought of no goals. Erin Renshaw changed that with a pair of goals to make the score 17-13. The Lynx would once again burn clock, and the desperate Owls were able to strike two more times in the final minute, but could not complete the comeback. The final score of the game was 17-15 Rhodes.

Barker was the leading scorer with six goals. She also added one assist, three groundballs, and seven draw controls. Bennett checked in with five goals. a ground ball, and a draw control. Burke was the only other Lynx to score multiple times with a pair. Emily Bruner was once again the catalyst for the offense, dishing out eight assists. It is the fourth straight game that she has recorded at least eight helpers.

Next up for the Lynx is a their third and final game of the Florida trip. They will travel to Bradenton to take on Stevenson University. Faceoff is scheduled for 11:00 am eastern.
