Panthers Avoid Sweep with Win Over Lynx

Birmingham Southern defeated Rhodes 13-1 on Monday

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (March 14, 2022) - Less than 24 hours after sweeping both legs of a doubleheader against the #3 ranked Birmingham Southern Panthers, the Rhodes Lynx dropped the final game of these series, losing 13-1. The loss moves Rhodes to an even 8-8-1 (3-3 SAA) on the year while BSC improves to 12-4 (4-2 SAA).

Southern opened the scoring in the second inning by scoring two on an RBI single and a wild pitch. Rhodes put runners on second and third in the bottom half of the inning, but a strikeout kept them from scoring.

The third inning was one to forget for the Lynx. After getting the first batter out on a popped up bunt, Rhodes allowed the next nine hitters to reach base safely through a variety of walks, hits, and hit batsmen. Brian Williams, Noah Best, and Cam McNearney all had two-RBI extra base hits in the inning. By the end of the madness, the score had ballooned to 11-0.

A throwing error and a double in the fourth extended the lead to 13-0 for the Panthers. Rhodes avoided the shutout by plating one in the bottom of the fourth. Will Heurtin reached after being hit by a pitch, and moved to second on a groundout. From there, he was brought in on a double from Corbin Kinder to score the lone Lynx run of the game. The final three outs were scoreless as both teams emptied their benches to give guys playing time.

Despite the loss, the Lynx are feeling good as they prepare for their spring break trip to Florida. Rhodes will play games on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday at the Blue Wahoos stadium in Pensacola.
