MEMPHIS, Tenn. (February 13, 2022) - The Rhodes Lynx finished their opening weekend undefeated after winning both games of a doubleheader against Oberlin College on Sunday afternoon. The Lynx are now 4-0 on the season, while Oberlin falls to 2-2.
Game One
It did not take long for Rhodes to get on the board. After
Madison Stringfield singled to lead things off, she was joined on the bases by
Abby Pons who walked. Oberlin then picked up two outs, and had a chance to escape the jam.
Hannah Schweiger had other ideas though as her swing put a ball well over the left field fence for a three-run bomb. The onslaught continued in the second when
Lauren Little singled, stole second, and was driven in on a
Leslie Matherne triple. Stringfield followed with a sac fly to plate Matherene. After a pitching change for Oberlin,
Katelyn Siekerka singled through the right side to score Pons, who had again walked in her plate appearance. At this point it was 6-0.
Matherne drove in her second run of the game in the third on a bunt. Stringfield then delivered another Lynx run on a fielder's choice that brought in
Peyton Cely to make the score 8-0. The Yeowomen rallied in the top of the fourth, putting together a two-out rally that would eventually bring in four runs. Unfortunately for them, those would be the only runs scored in the game as
Beth Fleming buckled down and finished strong for the Lynx in the circle. The final score was 8-4.
Pons reached base three times and scored twice. Little and Matherne each had two hits for the Lynx. Fleming ended up with five strikeouts on the day, and improved to 2-0 on the year.
Game Two
The bats stayed hot in the second game of the day. A double from Siekerka scored Stringfield in the first to put the first run on the board, followed RBI from
Madison Bromley,
Abby Pons and Ariel Schacter in the second to make it 4-0. Oberlin got three back in the third on a home run, but
Cam Ferguson got two back with a clutch pinch-hit in the bottom of the third to make it 6-3.
The top of the fourth was tough for Rhodes as the first five Oberlin hitters reached base safely. They would end up scoring four runs in the inning and taking a 7-6 lead. In the bottom half,
Madison Granberry singled to left center to bring in Schacter to tie the game back up.
Rhodes put the game away in the fifth with six runs. The Lynx sent ten hitters to the plate, and tallied a single (Bromley), a double (Pons), a triple (Matherne), and a home run (
Nikki Greuel) in the inning. After Oberlin got one back in the top of the sixth, Rhodes put the game away for good with a run-rule victory in the sixth. Stringfield drove in Greuel with a single, followed by a Pons single that plated
Hannah Grace Roden. With two outs and two on, Siekerka came through clutch, lifting a ball to centerfield that was deep enough for Stringfield to tag from third and score the winning run.
Every Rhodes hitter that set foot in the batter's box in game two recorded at least one hit and either a run or RBI.
Rhodes will host two more teams in the same doubleheader format next weekend. Starting on Saturday, the Lynx will welcome University of Dallas and Webster University. Games will be played at 10am, noon, and 2pm on both Saturday and Sunday.
