MEMPHIS, Tenn. (February 11, 2022) - On a night recognizing the senior class of Rhodes basketball, it was one senior in particular who helped clinch the #1 seed in the upcoming SAA playoffs with her performance in the 81-53 Rhodes win over Millsaps.
Alli Mayeux came out of the gates scorching hot, connecting on four three-pointers in the first quarter to give the Lynx a lead they would not relinquish all game long. When the Majors adjusted their defense to stop Mayeux, the rest of the Lynx were ready to step up, including freshman guard
Hallie Schiff, who knocked down a pair of threes herself in this one.   Â
After winning the first quarter 21-14, Rhodes repeated their performance with 21 more in the second quarter.
Catherine Althoff poured in eight points, followed by six from senior
Ellen Hagen. Even though the shots weren't falling as easily in the second quarter, the Lynx made up for it by getting to the free-throw line, where they knocked down nine attempts in the quarter. They went into halftime leading 42-27.Â
For the third straight period, Rhodes scored twenty-one points after the halftime break.
Libby Long and
Catherine Althoff nailed threes on three consecutive possessions to blow the Rhodes lead up to 52-32. Mayeux then added seven more points in the final minutes of the quarter, leading to a 63-43 lead through three.Â
The fourth quarter was basically the Lynx going through the motions until the final horn sounded. They outscored the Majors 18-10, helped along by eight trips to the free-throw line, and knocking down three of five three-point attempts. The Lynx defense was phenomenal in this one, and especially strong in the fourth where they limited the Majors to 27% shooting.Â
Mayeux ended the game with 25 points, including 6-11 shooting from distance. She also snagged five rebounds and dished out two assists. Althoff displayed an impressive variety of shots en route to 18 points and 10 rebounds.
A'niya Lagarde added nine points, but led all players with 13 rebounds. Hagen, the SAA leader in assists per game, handed out seven dimes and scored 12 points.Â
After the game, the coaching staff honored their three seniors ... Mayeux, Hagen and Keira Downey ... with a special presentation and a thank you for thei years of service to the women's basketball program.
With the win, Rhodes stays undefeated (10-0) in SAA play. Berry, currently in second place, has an 8-3 conference record. With only two games to play in the regular season, the Lynx are the regular season conference champions. Their next action will come against the Birmingham Southern Panthers at home on Sunday, with a scheduled 1:00 pm tipoff.Â
