Long Ball Lifts Lynx Past Panthers

Rhodes swept their season-opening doubleheader on Friday afternoon

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (February 11, 2022) - Rhodes softball got off to a hot start for the 2022 season, taking a pair of games from Greenville University. The won the opener 10-1, and then captured the nightcap 14-7.

Game One
Beth Fleming stepped in the circle and absolutely dominated the Panther lineup. The 5th year Lynx scattered five hits across five innings, allowing only one run and striking out seven with zero walks. She received plenty of support, including a four-piece from the offense to get the season started  in the bottom of the first. Madison Stringfield and Abby Pons each singled to lead things off, and were brought in on a laser from Madison Granberry to make it 3-0. On the next pitch, Katelyn Siekerka put a wall scraper over the left-field fence for her first dinger of the year.

Ariel Schacter got in on the action in the third, with a two-run blast to center that brought in Hannah Schweiger. Then in the fourth, Rhodes added four more on a Pons single, a two-RBI double from Siekerka, and a Schweiger single. Fleming then struck out the final two batters in the top of the fifth to seal the win.

Game Two
Greenville was the first to strike in the second game, plating two unearned runs in the second following a two-out throwing error from the Lynx. Rhodes was quick to respond in the bottom half when Granberry doubled to left, scoring Leslie Matherne. Pons and Stringfield each added RBI singles as well to make it a 3-2 game.

The highlight of the day came in the bottom of the fourth when Madison Bromley cranked a grand slam into the tress in left field, blowing the game open to 8-2. Jordyn Ebert and Hannah Grace Roden added RBI as well before the Panthers were able to make three outs in the frame.

Greenville got three back in the fourth on a home run, and then two more in the fifth to make it 10-7. Undeterred, Rhodes was able to add one in the fifth on a Schacter RBI single, and three in the sixth on a Cam Ferguson bunt, a Panther throwing error, and a Siekerka sac fly. Head Coach Luke Wagner then called up Fleming to close things out in the top of the seventh, which she did with two strikeouts and a groundout.

For the day Rhodes scored 24 runs on 25 hits. Stringfield and Pons each had four, while Granberry and Siekerka each drove in four.

The Lynx are off on Saturday, and then will play another double dip against Oberlin College at home on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 pm central.
