Rhodes Earns Run-Rule Win in First Game of Season

Rhodes defeated MUW 15-1 on Friday

JACKSON, Miss. (February 11, 2022) - The Rhodes Lynx started their season off with a bang, earning a run-rule win over Mississippi University for Women, 15-1, on Friday afternoon.

Ben Wilson got the action started with a two-out, inside-the-park-homerun in the bottom of the second. The excitement would be shot lived however, when the Owls got the run back on a passed ball in the top of the third.

In the bottom of the third, five straight Lynx got on base ot start the inning, highlighted by a Wood Kimbrough RBI double and a two-run single from John McNair. They would then add three more in the fourth on a Kimbrough sac fly and RBI base hits from McNair and Bryce Anders.

The onslaught continued in the fifth inning when Sam Roffwarg scored on a wild pitch, and yet another McNair base knock plated Chris Penna and Will Heurtin, making it 10-1.

Coach Jeff Cleanthes started clearing the bench in the sixth, and his guys came through. Malcolm Rohl singled, followed by a Corbin Kinder double to score him. Dante Messina picked up the third pinch-hit of the inning with a double of his own, scorched down the left field line that scored a pair. Julien Brown and Daniel Hicks each drove in runs as well before the inning ended with the score 15-1.

Colby Slaughter then fired a clean seventh inning, including two strikeouts, to seal the first win of the season for the Lynx. Rhodes finished the day with 16 hits, including five doubles and a home run. McNair led the way with three hits and five RBI. Jacob Dubs, Jaxon Cady, Ben Coulthard, and Slaughter combined for ten strikeouts on the mound.

It will be a quick turnaround for Rhodes as they face the potent offense of LaGrange College on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 11:00 am central from Jackson.
