MEMPHIS, Tenn. (January 21, 2022) - The Rhodes women's basketball team secured their fifth consecutive victory with an impressive 76-51 win over the Sewanee Tigers at home on Friday evening. The win moves Rhodes to 12-2 (4-0 SAA) on the year, while Sewanee falls to 5-11 (0-6 SAA).
The Lynx were playing for the first time in twelve days, but did not show any signs of rust.
Catherine Althoff got the party started with a nice three-point play down low for the first points of the game. She would also add another jumper and two free throws by the end of the quarter. The Lynx moved the ball efficiently on offense, with five different players scoring multiple points in the quarter. A half-court heave from Ashley Stewart at the end of the quarter cut into the Rhodes lead, by they still held a 20-14 advantage after one.
Althoff again was the first to score in the second quarter, followed by a three from
Libby Long.
Alli Mayeux stepped offensively in the second, at one point scoring seven straight Lynx points. Rhodes' defense was especially impressive, limiting the Tigers to 4-15 shooting and nine points. At halftime, the Lynx held a sizable 34-23 lead.
Rhodes opened the second half with eight straight points, including two more triples from Long. The Tigers attempted a comeback with a 7-0 run a few minutes in to the period, but two free throws and a three from Althoff halted the run. Three-pointers from
Ellen Hagen and Mayeux wrapped up an impressive third for Rhodes as they flaunted a 56-36 advantage.
With the game in hand, the Rhodes defense was a little slack in the fourth, allowing 15 points. A'Niya Lagarde did her best to counter the Sewanee attack with five straight Lynx points. Hagen added a dagger three with two minutes to go, followed by a sweet layin from
Hallie Schiff that iced the game. By the end of it all, the Lynx had secured a 76-51 victory.
Rhodes is 7-0 at home on the season, with an average margin of victory of 14 points. They shot 45% from the field in ths one and 33% from three-point range. Althoff (17 points and 13 rebounds) and Mayeux (14 points and 11 rebounds) each recorded double doubles, while
Libby Long chipped in 16 points including four threes.
Next on the schedule is another home matchup, this time against the Centre Colonels. Tipoff is set for 1:00 pm at Mallory Gym.
