Memphis - Rhodes College women's lacrosse scored the first two goals against No. 13-ranked SUNY Cortland Sunday in the second round of the 2021 NCAA Division III Championship. The Lynx ultimately fell to the Red Dragons 23-12, snapping Rhodes' 14-game win streak. The Lynx conclude their 2021 campaign with a 14-1 record while Cortland won their 14th straight game and advance to the regional round to face No. 10 Messiah next weekend. The Red Dragons are currently 14-1 on the season.
Cortland tied the game before junior
Baylee Barker won the draw control and went straight to the cage to give the Lynx their final lead of the game (3-2). Cortland's Hannah Lorenzen, recorded a hat trick on her way to scoring six of the Red Dragons' next seven goals. With Cortland leading 9-5, freshman
Avery Burke connected with the back of the net for the Lynx. The Red Dragons scored five of the next eight goals where the Lynx recorded the final two goals in the last minute of the first half. Cortland held a 14-9 advantage at halftime after outshooting the Lynx 26-15.
Cortland's 10-3 second half draw control advantage propelled the Red Dragons to a 9-3 scoring advantage including four straight to open the second half, ensuring their season remained in tact.
Cortland took advantage of Lynx yellow and green cards, scoring six player-up goals while Rhodes' netted two. Lorenzen finished with a game-high 10 goals and Kiki Meager 15 draw controls.
For Rhodes, Barker tallied 11 draw controls, moving her career program record mark to 298. She also broke the single season program record for draw controls, finishing the 2021 campaign with 144. Barker led Rhodes with four goals while freshman
Julia Dalessandro recorded three caused turnovers. Burke also completed the game with four points on three goals and an assist. Also recording points in the game were
Emily Bruner with two assists, improving her program record to 61 assists this season, while
Payton Bennett and
Carina Wesker each scored twice. Freshman
Chloe Parker recorded her first NCAA postseason goal in her only shot of the game. In goal,
Emma Bradley made six saves.
Games for the day were moved up two hours due to predicted thunderstorms in the surrounding Memphis area. The first second-round game of the day endured a 30 minute delay, which prompted Rhodes and Cortland to shorten their warmup to 35 minutes instead of 45 minutes. After steady rain during warmups, the sun and humidity stuck around for much of the contest. About an hour following the game, lightning returned to the area.
Rhodes advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the sixth straight year after winning their fifth straight regular season SAA Championship and sixth straight SAA Tournament Championship.
