Danville, Ky. - After dropping an exciting first game of the 2021 Southern Athletic Association Softball Tournament to No. 1-seeded Birmingham-Southern, the Lynx rebounded for a 14-0 five inning victory over Millsaps later Friday afternoon. The win keeps Rhodes' season alive in their quest for their third straight SAA Tournament Championship appearance.
Game 1
After a scoreless first inning, a wild pitch in the second to start the second inning eventually allowed the Lynx to score first against No. 6-ranked Birmingham-Southern.
Hannah Grace Roden doubled and with runners on first and third, a
Peyton Clark sac fly scored the first run of the game. BSC sat down in order in the bottom half of the second before Siekerka, who just hit her first collegiate home run two games prior, hit a solo shot to give the Lynx a 2-0 advantage in the third. Rhodes crossed one more in the inning before BSC scored four on three hits, a sac fly and a Lynx error. A Panther solo homer led off the bottom of the fourth where they scored six more runs to lead 10-3.
Rhodes climbed back with three runs in the top of the fifth on five singles. Each team crossed one more before Rhodes loaded the bases in the top of the seventh. Trailing by four, senior
Lauren King stepped to the plate with two outs and the bases loaded. The perfect situation for the Lynx to tie the game, King hit a fly ball that stayed just inside the park to end the game. Siekerka went 4-for-5 while King went 3-for-5.
Game 2
A solo home run from Siekerka scored the game-winner in the first inning. After a scoreless second, Rhodes' offense lit up the field as the Lynx scored six runs on six hits and still stranded two runners. With an out to start the bottom of the third, King homered. A
Madison Granberry double scored two before Millsaps changed pitchers. With a 5-0 lead and two outs, Clark singled in Granberry before
Madison Stringfield and Siekerka each earned an RBI on a single to the outfield.
Almost unthinkable, Rhodes scored more runs in the fourth inning than the third, crossing seven runs on six hits, two walks, and an error, all with two outs. After two flyouts started the inning, Roden walked before Granberry blasted her first collegiate home run to left field. Stringfield then brought home Clark who walked before Siekerka hit her second homer of the day, a three-run shot to left field to give the Lynx a 13-0 advantage. An error prolonged the inning before
Lauren Little singled in
Leslie Matherne.
Rhodes totaled 16 hits in the game which included four home runs. In the circle, Keller earned the complete-game shutout. She struck out four and allowed just two hits in five innings.
Rhodes will face No. 2- seeded Berry next. Tentatively (due to weather), the Lynx are the only game scheduled for Saturday with a 10 a.m. ET start. Stay tuned to our schedule page and social media (@RhodesAthletics) for updates.
