Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Rhodes Drops Heartbreaker Against Emory

Loss snaps seven-game win streak for Lynx

ATLANTA, Ga. (December 4, 2021) - For the first time in almost a month, the women's basketball team took a loss on the court, falling to Emory University 80-76 on Saturday afternoon. The loss moves Rhodes to 7-2 on the season, while Emory improves to 5-3.

Both teams came out hot to start things off, combining for 47 points in the first quarter. The Lynx were the first on the board courtesy of a Taya Lee layup, but Emory was quick to respond with back-to-back jumpers. Moments later, Tori Huggins knocked down a pair of threes to extend the Eagles lead to 10-4. Rhodes was able to pull within two on an Ellen Hagen triple to make it 15-13, but again Emory found a way to bounce back and would eventually take the quarter 27-20. Rhodes was efficient form the floor, shooting 8-17 (47%), but five threes from Emory was the difference early on.

The Lynx changed the pace in the second quarter, outscoring Emory 23-17. Rhodes hit their first three shots of the quarter, including a big and-one from Alli Mayeux that made the score 29-27. With about three minutes left in the half, Alexys Mathangani but the team on her back, as she scored eight straight points for the Lynx, eventually tying the game at 39. A free throw from Catherine Althoff was the final point of the half, with Emory leading 44-43.

Rhodes pulled away in the third quarter as they turned in their third straight quarter shooting above 46%, this time putting in eight shots on 14 attempts. On the defensive end, they limited Emory to 5-19 (26%) in the period. The Eagles scored the first bucket of the second half, but the Lynx responded with an 11-0 run to take a 54-46 lead. Four different Lynx players scored during the run. Libby Long completed a three-point play, followed by a pair of A'Niya Lagarde free throws to make the score 64-55.

The fourth quarter was an odd one as neither team performed particularly well. The Lynx were 3-19 form the floor, while Emory could only manage 4-13. The difference was free throws. Rhodes was whistled for an astounding twelve violations in the quarter leading to 20 free throws for the Eagles. Emory took advantage of the situation, knocking down 17 of the 20 attempts. The Lynx were outscored 9-2 in the final 90 seconds of the game leading to the final of 80-76.

Mathangani was the leading scorer for the Lynx with 14 points. She also added two rebounds and an assist. Mayeux and Hagen each chipped in eleven points as well. Claire Brock had 24 points for Emory to lead all scorers.

It will be a quick turnaround for the Lynx as they head to Mississippi University for Women on Sunday. First tip is scheduled for 3:00 pm.
