Lynx Drop Second Half Battle to No. 11/13 Oglethorpe in SAA Tournament Championship

Atlanta, Ga. - After advancing the the Southern Athletic Association women's basketball tournament championship game for the second year in a row, the Rhodes Lynx fell to No. 11/13-ranked Oglethorpe University in a 2019 championship re-match. Head coach Rodney Rogan and the Lynx went 17-10 in his first year at the helm while Oglethorpe is now 27-1 on the year as they head into the NCAA Tournament with a program record number of wins.

The Stormy Petrels got out to a 17-8 lead midway through the first quarter. An Alyssa Owens three-pointer, her first of five on the afternoon, followed by a Maya Longacre jumper cut Oglethorpe's lead to three with less than a minute left in the quarter. The hosts layed in a layup to lead 21-16 after the first 10 minutes of play. 

Another Owens trey with five minutes left in the first half cut the lead to two, but Oglethorpe went up by four again. Owens connected on a layup and then made the free throw after she was followed to pull within one as the Stormy Petrels led 32-31 with 1:12 to play in the half. Each team concluded the half with two made free throws to keep it a one-point game at halftime. 

Kiera Downey opened the second half with a bucket to put Rhodes ahead briefly until the game was tied 37-37 on another Downey basket. A six-point run for the Stormy Petrels put Oglethorpe ahead for the remainder of the game, going up by as many as 18 points in the fourth quarter.

Owens concluded the season tying for the game-high with 24 points while also leading the Lynx with six rebounds. Downey recorded 19 points and earned three steals while Ellen Hagen tallied four assists. As a team the Lynx went 7-of-21 from the arc and averaged 38.3 percent in the field overall. The Lynx only missed one free throw on 15 attempts. Oglethorpe shot 54.7 percent on 53 field goal attempts and held a 38-24 rebounding advantage.

At the end of the tournament, Owens was named to the 2020 SAA All-Tournament team. Rhodes will lose Owens and student assistant Mark Massey to graduation.
