Lynx Hit Three Home Runs as Softball Splits Sunday Games

Memphis - Rhodes College softball fell to Defiance 15-5 on a rainy Sunday before the Lynx rebounded for an 11-4 victory over Fontbonne.

Defiance
After Rhodes left the bases loaded at the end of the second inning, the Yellow Jackets scored three runs in the third. Rhodes answered with four runs to take the lead. A lead-off walk followed by three singles plated two runs before a sac fly and single scored the final two runs. After a scoreless fourth Defiance scored three more runs on a single swing over the fence. Rhodes' Shannon Tierney pulled the Lynx within one with a solo homer in the bottom of the fifth. The Yellow Jackets plated one run in the sixth before finishing the game with eight runs in the seventh.

Tierney was the only Lynx to earn multiple hits in the loss. She scored twice and went 3-for-4 with three RBI.

Fontbonne
Rhodes scored early against the Griffins, when Anna Kula scored on a throwing error. A double, passed ball and sac fly played two runs for the Griffins before the Lynx scored four runs in the bottom of the second inning. Six hits and three Fontbonne errors contributed to a 5-2 Lynx advantage. Anna Kula singled and eventually made her way all the way around the bases after an errant throw to third went into the outfield. Due to the defensive shift, Kula was able to make it all the way home since nobody was out in left field. Two plays later starting pitcher Lauren King hit a solo home run.

A walk, double and single up the middle in the third scored a run for Fontbonne before the Griffins pulled within one on a double. Two walks and a three-run home run from Samantha Feinstein gave Rhodes an 8-4 lead in the fourth before the Lynx finished the game with two runs in the fifth and one in the sixth.

King struck out eight Griffins and is now 5-0 in the circle. Kula, King, Marisa Moore, Tierney and Hannah Grace Roden recorded two hits. Taylor Clark earned a sac fly to plate the final run.

The Lynx open SAA play at Birmingham-Southern next weekend.
