Memphis - Rhodes College women's basketball, the No. 2-seed in the 2020 Southern Athletic Association tournament, hosted No. 7-seeded Sewanee Saturday. The Lynx connected on seven three-pointers in the first quarter before finishing the 86-58 victory with 17 treys, the second highest of the season. Rhodes will advance to the semifinals next weekend. Rhodes is one of only four DIII schools to sink 17 or more treys twice in the season. Earlier this year Rhodes hit 19 three-pointers against Agnes Scott for a program record.
The Lynx jumped out to an 18-8 lead midway through the first quarter before a 15-5 run finished the first 10 minutes of action. Senior
Alyssa Owens went 3-of-4 from the arc while
Kiera Downey sank both attempts. With five minutes left in the first half,
Ellen Hagen drained a trey as she was hit hard, ultimately making the four-point play to give the Lynx a 25-point lead (43-18). Sewanee cut the lead to 18 (51-33) by halftime.Â
Rhodes went hot again from the arc, ending the third quarter on a 14-2 run to lead by 31 points, their largest of the game. Nine of those points came from treys as the Lynx went 5-of-11 from downtown.
Sewanee stepped up their defense in the fourth quarter and held an 18-15 scoring advantage.
Maya Longacre led the game with a career-high 15 rebounds, 12 of which came in the second half. That's a single-game high for the team this season while Longacre also led the Lynx with four steals. Three Lynx totaled double-digit points, all of whom also recorded four assists, led by Downey (21) who went 7-of-10 overall and 4-of-6 from the arc. Owens finished the game 6-of-11 for 19 points which included five of eight treys. And Hagen only missed one three-pointer on five attempts as she finished the game with 16 points.
Rhodes will await their fate tomorrow and will face the winner of No. 3-Centre/No. 6-Berry on Saturday.
