Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Berry Staves Off Lynx Comeback Attempt

Memphis - Rhodes College men's basketball succumbed to Berry College Friday night 72-61. After a 10-point halftime deficit the Lynx were edged in the second half 34-33.

Nine straight points for the Lynx put Rhodes ahead 11-3 to begin the game, but after the teams traded buckets one more, the Vikings responded with six points in a row. Senior Nick De Feria drained a three-pointer as he was fouled and then converted the free throw for the four-point play to bring Rhodes back into the game. Tied 15-15, Berry netted 10 unanswered points to open the game with 5:50 left in the first half. The Vikings eventually held a 15-point advantage. Jake Nestlehutt scored a trey, but his missed shot from beyond the arc the next time down inevitably got fans on their feet when Wiley Pippenger jumped up and tipped in the offensive rebound. After Berry hit a jumper, Mac James sprinted down the court for a fast break driving layup to end the half on a Lynx 7-2 run. Berry led 38-28 at halftime.

Berry led by 16 points with 5:01 left in the game but a Lynx 10-3 run cut that lead to nine with 1:24 to go. Rhodes trailed by nine with 53 seconds left as well but were forced to foul, in which Berry converted two free throws. During the final five minutes Berry only connected on eight free throws.

Rhodes' Koki Wiley recorded the only double-double of the game with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Fellow freshman Jalen Essick led Rhodes with 14 points while Mitch Weatherford tallied 13 points.

Rhodes will turn to face Oglethorpe Sunday at 3 p.m. back inside Mallory Gymnasium.
