Mount Berry, Ga. - Rhodes College women's basketball improved to 2-0 after defeating Berry College on the road 70-62. The win takes the Lynx to 7-5 on the year while the Vikings drop to 6-7 overall and 0-2 in conference.
A 20-11 first quarter broke open the game until the Lynx held a 15-point lead at halftime. Rhodes edged Berry 17-15 in the third quarter, but the Vikings' 23-14 fourth quarter advantage wasn't enough as the Lynx held on for the win.
In the first quarter,
Alli Mayeux was shooting hot, securing all four three-point attempts before she totaled 13 of Rhodes' 20 points. She also made her only trey attempt of the second quarter before going 1-of-2 from long range in the final quarter. During the fourth frame, the Vikings out-rebounded the Lynx 17-7 and shot 47.4% compared to Rhodes' 36.4%.
Mayeux finished with the game-high 22 points, going 6-of-7 from three-point range, a new career-high, and 7-of-8 in the field overall while also adding four reboounds. Also scoring in double digits was
Alyssa Owens (12) and
Ellen Hagen (10).
Kiera Downey led the game with a career-high nine assists while
Maya Longacre led the Lynx with nine rebounds.
Rhodes will square off against Oglethorpe on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET, looking to extend their three-game win streak. Both teams advanced to the NCAA Tournament last year after the Lynx defeated the Stormy Petrels 56-41 to win the SAA Tournament Championship.
