Memphis - Rhodes College women's basketball gave head coach
Rodney Rogan bragging rights over former teammate Justin LeBlanc who helms Millsaps College. The Lynx took down the Majors 67-58 and are now 3-1 in SAA play and 8-6 on the year. Millsaps drops to 7-8 and 1-3 in conference.
Sophomore
Alli Mayeux sank a three-pointer to open the game but a Millsaps 11-9 edge was soon negated when the Lynx scored eight points in a row including back-to-back treys. After Rhodes held an 18-13 lead in the first quarter, the Lynx took a 12-point lead with 1:51 left in the half. The largest lead of the half came on senior
Alyssa Owens' 12th point of the game, a three-pointer, enabling her to be the 17th Lynx in program history to accumulate 1,000 career points. Rhodes would hold a 32-25 lead at halftime.
Maya Longacre scored Rhodes' first five points of the second half on Rhodes' way to another 12-point advantage. The Lynx edged the Majors by one point in the third quarter. With 5:47 to play, Millsaps cut Rhodes' lead to five but back-to-back three-pointer's from
Libby Long helped the Lynx reach a double-digit lead once again. With 1:24 to go, Mayeux sank a three-pointer to give the Lynx their largest lead of the game (13 points). She would narrowly miss a double-double, totaling 18 points and nine rebounds in the win. She led the game from long range, going 4-of-9 from beyond the arc.
Also scoring double digits were Owens and
Kiera Downey, both of whom scored 14 points. Downey led the game with six assists while Longacre and freshman
Alexys Mathangani each recorded two blocks.
Despite the Majors leading the game in field goal percentage (.418), Millsaps went 2-of-12 in the game from three-point range while the Lynx went 12-of-37. Ten of Millsaps' points came on free throws (on 13 attempts) while the Lynx struggled from the line sinking 11-of-24 attempts.
The Lynx are back in action inside Mallory Gymnasium on Sunday, hosting Birmingham-Southern at 1 p.m.
