Fenton, Mo. - Webster University hosted Rhodes College men's soccer under the lights on a cloudless night at the World Wide Technology Soccer Park. The two sides battled and settled for a draw.
The first half ended in a stalemate despite Webster controlling the possession for most of the half. The Lynx were pinned-in on their side of the field surviving several waves of attacks and building confidence through their defense. Rhodes goalkeeper Will Birka-White stretched for two clutch saves in the first period to keep it goalless.
The second half was end to end action with the Lynx putting up ten shots and forcing Webster's keeper into making five saves. However, in the 60th minute Webster put a ball past the Rhodes back line when their winger slotted the ball into the back corner of the goal. Rhodes would regroup and take the game to Webster. In a lovely string of passes, freshman centerback Maxwell Hughes found Travis Tuerff's feet in the middle of the field for Tuerff to play a beautifully weighted ball into striker Jereme Gordon's run. Gordon's run took him between Webster's defense to and onto goal where he was calm, cool, and collected easily sliding the ball into the near post to score with a little over a minute left in the game.
The game went into double overtime where Rhodes used their momentum and fitness to put two shots and several crosses at the Webster goal. However, neither side was able to score and the game ended in a 1-1 draw.
Rhodes College will head North into Naperville, Ill. to take on North Central College who are 3-1 on Sunday at 11:00 a.m. CDT.
