9/29/2019 11:30:00 AM

Box Score Newport News, Va. - Rhodes College field hockey went scoreless for 52 minutes before securing their lone goal in a 3-1 loss to the University of Mary Washington Sunday on the campus of Christopher Newport University.

The Lynx are now 3-4 on the year, headed into Southern Athletic Association play next weekend.

After a scoreless first quarter, Mary Washington scored the lone goal of the first half in the 22nd minute. The Eagles then scored back-to-back goals in the third quarter within two and a half minutes to take a 3-0 lead.

Rhodes was able to escape the shutout when Hailey Mules scored her second goal of the weekend. The Lynx earned a corner and after Ashley Neiswender served in the ball, Mules took a shot and gathered the rebound from UWW's save before scoring near the left post as the 53rd minute began.

Despite the score, the teams were relatively even in shots during the game with UWW holding a slight 17-15 edge. The Lynx held a 7-4 corner advantage. Nina Migneco made eight saves in cage for Rhodes while UWW negated nine Lynx shots on goal.

Rhodes will host Sewanee in a doubleheader next weekend. The 10 a.m. game at Mason Field will count towards SAA standings while Sunday's 11 a.m. contest will not.
