Jackson, Miss. - Rhodes College football suffered a 14-0 road loss to Millsaps Saturday night. The Lynx recorded 119 rushing yards and a season-high 134 yards receiving on 21 attempts.
A fumble during Rhodes' first possession on their own 11-yard line resulted in the game-winning touchdown for the Majors. On the ensuing kickoff,
Adam Martinez ran the ball back for the Lynx-high 30 yards. Rhodes missed a 22-yard field goal to cut Millsaps lead as the second quarter began. After Millsaps made a 50-yard punt, the Lynx turned the ball over after a fumble on their own 30-yard line. The Lynx defense stood firm as Millsaps turned the ball over on downs after a breakup from
Taylor Smith on a pass into the endzone brought up fourth down. The Majors then finished the drive on an incomplete pass. Millsaps scored their final touchdown on a nine-play drive, ending in a six-yard completion with three minutes left in the first half.
Each possession in the third quarter resulted in a punt with freshman
Fred Jackson making punts of 46, 48, 55 and 42 yards for the Lynx. The Lynx defense forced Millsaps to punt from inside their own endzone as the third quarter wrapped up, but another Lynx fumble gave the Majors possession again. Jackson also made a 54-yard punt in the fourth quarter.
During the game,
JaVon Cooper and
Monroe McKay each recorded a rush for a season-high 47 yards. McKay accumulated a net gain of 56 rushing yards for the Lynx while Cooper tallied 52 yards.
Charlie Mackey totaled 32 yards on five catches while Ethan Chamberlain recorded the longest catch of the night for the Lynx at 17 yards.
Defensively,
D'On Coofer,
Jordan McCoy and Smith all recorded a tackle for loss. Smith totaled two breakups.
Tony Heyward and
Tre' Barnes both recorded six tackles while
Trent Holt, McCoy and
Conner Mitchell recorded five tackles each.
Jackson finished the night with 335 yards on seven punts, averaging 47.9 yards per punt, the longest of the season. Two of those were over 50 yards and four fell inside the 20 yard line.
The Lynx were only called for two penalties in the game, a season low.
Rhodes is back in Memphis for family weekend on Saturday, September 28 hosting Sewanee for the Orgill Cup at 1 p.m.
