Memphis - After a power outage postponed Sunday's matchup for the No. 12 regionally ranked Rhodes women's tennis team against the No. 10 regionally ranked Millsaps squad, the two conference opponents got to work Tuesday.
Rhodes won one and three doubles and hoped for the sweep to start the match as No. 2 doubles went back and forth. The Lynx prevailed as
Caroline Doherty and
Kate McGough defeated their opponents 8-6 to give Rhodes a 3-0 advantage.
Millsaps took the lead after taking four singles victories until McGough won at No. 4 singles 6-3, 7-6 (7-3), putting the deciding game in the hands of No. 1 singles
Dasha Safarian. Safarian, who fell 4-6 in the opening set, won 6-2. In the third set she went up 7-6 and then finally decided the match 7-4 in the tiebreaker.
"This was a great team win for us," said Rhodes head coach
Jenn Tinnell. "After sweeping doubles we knew we had to fight hard for singles points. Dasha and Kate had incredible focus and determination to win their two singles matches to clinch the match."
Rhodes' win over the Majors breaks Millsaps' three match win streak in the series and hands the Majors their first conference loss of the season. The Lynx are now 10-4 on the year and 3-2 in conference. Millsaps is now 11-4 overally and 3-1 in SAA play.
The Lynx will close out the regular season this weekend, hosting Berry College on Saturday (Senior Day) and Oglethorpe on Sunday. Fans should stay tuned to social media (@RhodesAthletics) and the website for schedule changes due to the weather.
