Kissimmee, Fla. - The No. 18-ranked Rhodes College softball team fell to Suffolk (4-3) and WashU (7-0) on their final day of competition over spring break. The Lynx have now lost five of their last six games and sit 14-6 on the season. Today's games were the season openers for both the Rams and Bears.
Suffolk
After two scoreless innings, Suffolk scored first in their season opener after a walk and two singles. Rhodes eliminated a 2-0 lead by the Rams after getting the force out at home for the second out before concluding the inning on a popup to short. The Lynx tied the game in the fourth after
Shannon Tierney singled to left to score
Kendall Henry. Henry singled to leadoff the inning and then stole second base. Suffolk scored two runs in the fifth off three hits and an error.
The Lynx pulled within one run in the fifth after leading the inning with two walks but Suffolk scored again in the sixth with two outs on a single through the right side. The Lynx tallied the final run of the game in the bottom of the sixth on a passed ball after Suffolk committed two errors.
Peyton Clark and
Marisa Moore both tallied two hits.
WashU
In WashU's season opener, the Bears stole second in the first and third innings after each leadoff runner got on base and eventually scored to give WashU a 2-0 advantage. After the RBI-single in the third, another stolen base put the Bears in scoring position to cross the plate after a single up the middle. WashU then took a 4-0 lead after a triple scored their leadoff batter in the fourth.
The Bears plated three runs in the sixth off three hits, including a triple, walk and stolen base. They held Rhodes to one hit through five innings.
Bri Maniscalco struck out eight in eight innings across both games. Freshman
Abby Pons suffered both losses.
The Lynx head back to Memphis and will host Birmingham-Southern March 16-17.
