Memphis - The No. 20-ranked Rhodes College softball team opened conference play with a sweep over Centre College at home 7-0 and 13-3 in five innings. After starting the year 2-1, the Lynx have now won nine straight games to improve to 11-1 on the season.
Game One
Bri Maniscalco and the Lynx were off to a fantastic start after the Colonels went down in order before Rhodes scored six runs in the bottom of the first on five hits and two errors to open the series. The Lynx recorded a sac fly, sac bunt, three singles, two doubles, a stolen base and advanced on a wild pitch to plate almost all of their runs at once. Maniscalco allowed just one hit through five innings before the Colonels tallied one in each of the final two innings. Rhodes finished scoring when
Peyton Clark doubled home
Anna Kula who led off the seventh with a single and then stole second base. Kula finished the game two-of-three at the plate and scored twice, the only Lynx to do so in the game. Maniscalco improves to 6-1 on the year.
Game Two
Rhodes recorded 13 hits in the second game and scored five in the first and seven in the third to earn the sweep. Centre went up 2-0 after two throwing errors, a hit and a fielder's choice. Rhodes' five runs in the bottom half of the inning also came on two errors, but the Lynx also recorded four hits, a sac fly and a stolen base. Jill Healy gave the Lynx a 6-2 lead after a solo home run. In the very next inning, Rhodes' seven runs came on from five singles, two doubles, a stolen base, wild pitch and another home run from Healy, this time a three-run shot. Down 13-2, Centre crossed another run in the fifth after a single, throwing error, and walk loaded the bases. The Colonels hit a sac fly to center for the second out, but Rhodes caught the second base runner at third when
Kayla Rose threw the ball to the cutoff,
Leslie Matherne, who fired to third baseman
Taylor Clark for the double play to end the ballgame. Healy tallied five RBI as she went three-of-three with three runs scored.
Kendall Henry and
Haley Rath both recorded two RBI while Peyton Clakr, Matherne, and
Lauren King all scored twice. King picked up her fifth win of the season, allowing three hits in five innings while striking out three.
On the Day
Healy led Rhodes with a .714 average, earning five hits on seven at-bats. She totaled six RBI, four runs scored, two home runs and a double for a 1.714 slugging percentage. Matherne and Kula both hit .600, going three-of-five with an RBI.
Peyton Clark, Kula and King all crossed the plate three times while Matherne and Rath scored twice.
Rhodes and Centre hope to finish the series at a new time on Sunday. The game has been pushed back to 1 p.m. in the hopes that Saturday night's rain is lighter than expected. The Lynx will leave campus Sunday afternoon and head to Florida for eight games over Spring Break. Rhodes then hosts Birmingham-Southern March 26-17.
