Explosive Fourth Period Propels Lynx to SAA Semifinals

Jackson, Miss. - Rhodes women's basketball overpowered Birmingham-Southern 63-43 in quarterfinal action of the Southern Athletic Association tournament after a 23-7 fourth period advantage. The Lynx, seeded fourth, will look ahead to the semifinals when they take on No. 1-seed and host, Millsaps College on Saturday at 4 p.m. CST. 

Eight points, all from Lindsey Whiteside, a block from Moriah Muhammad and two defensive rebounds from Allie Young got Rhodes off to an 8-7 lead with the Lynx eventually leading 12-9 before BSC went on a 10-2 run to put the Panthers ahead 19-14 and event 27-22 halftime advantage.
 
During the first half, Muhammad and Young each tallied a block with Muhammad bringing down seven rebounds. The Lynx held a 26-16 rebounding advantage after the first two periods which included 10 offensive boards.
 
BSC started the second half with a steal and fast break layup, but Rhodes' Kiera Downey returned the favor twice, tying the game with seven minutes to play in the third period. Trailing 34-31, the Lynx posted a 9-2 run to end the third period with a 40-36 Lynx lead.

An offensive rebound and put-back from Muhammad gave Rhodes a 48-40 lead, forcing a BSC timeout. Young scored six points in a row to give the Lynx a 14-point lead with 3:37 to go. Allie Mayeau's and-one conversion on an inbounds pass put Rhodes up 57-40 with 2:22 to play. The Lynx continued to score, netting four more points before BSC connected on a three-pointer to end Rhodes' 17-point run. Ellen Hagen ended scoring with two free throws for the Lynx.

Young led the game with 16 points, nine rebounds and two blocks while Muhammad tallied 13 points, nine points and three blocks. Whiteside finished the game with 12 points and seven rebounds. Overall, Rhodes shot 37.5% in the game and made 11 of 15 free throws. 
 
Rhodes will now face Millsaps tomorrow in the SAA Semifinals at 4 p.m. CST.
