Danville, Ky. - Rhodes College men's basketball proved they weren't ready for their season to come to a close as the No. 8-seeded Lynx put up a tough outing against conference regular season champs, Centre College.
A 42-34 halftime advantage was enough for Centre to hold the Lynx at bay and move on to the semifinals of the Southern Athletic Association Tournament. Rhodes fell to the Colonels 75-66 after suffering a 20-point loss to the same team at the beginning of the month.
The Lynx scored the first five points of the game and led 10-9 until Centre took the lead. Rhodes re-gained the advantage after a
Mitch Weatherford jumper with 11:02 left, but three consecutive treys put Centre up by eight points. Rhodes cut that lead to five until Centre led by eight at halftime. The Colonels connected on a free throw to begin the second half, but the Lynx scored six unanswered points to pull within three and eventually tied the game 45-45 after a
Daniel Darst three-pointer with 15:39 to go. Rhodes then took a 58-56 lead after Weatherford connected from long range with 10 minutes left to play, but Centre broke open the game with six straight points to hold on for the win.
Four Lynx tallied double digits, led by
Bryce Berry who went six-of-11 for 15 points as well as Weatherford who sank three of five three-points attempts to accumulate 15 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Darst posted 14 points in his final collegiate outing and also grabbed a team-high eight rebounds and five assists.
Preston Giroux finished the season with 12 points and seven rebounds.
Rhodes made four of their five free throw attempts, but Centre sank 13 of their 18 attempts and held a 42-32 rebounding advantage.
Rhodes, who finished the season 5-21, will lose Darst and
Vaughn Samson to graduation.
