Memphis - Rhodes College softball fell to Huntingdon 3-0 on the second day of the season before defeating University of the Ozarks 6-5 in the bottom of the ninth. Rhodes is now 3-1 on the season.
The Lynx got behind early after the Hawks took advantage of a Lynx error and scored two unearned runs. A solo home run in the third handed Rhodes their first loss of the season.
An error from Ozarks started a two-run second inning for Rhodes before early errors once again put the Lynx behind as the Eagles capitalized and scored four unearned runs in the next half inning. Freshman
Leslie Matherne stepped up to the plate in the third and recorded two RBI to tie the game on a single through the right side. Ozarks tallied yet another unearned run on a fielder's choice as the Lynx tried to get the runner out at home. Freshman
Taylor Clark came through for the Lynx with a sac fly to left to score
Kendall Henry and tie the game once more (5-5). With sophomore
Lauren King still in the circle headed into the seventh inning, Ozarks grounded out, flied out and then struck out looking to give the Lynx walk-off hopes. With one out, Henry was hit by a pitch to put the winning run on base. King stepped up to the plate and hit a hard line drive off the right center fence, allowing Henry to cross the winning run.
Henry finished the day three-of-four with three runs scored while King earned her second win, went three-of-four at the plate, scored once and tallied the walk-off RBI. Matherne also had a multi-hit game and went two-of-four. Marissa Moore and
Anna Kula recorded the other runs in the game.
The Lynx are scheduled to host LeMoyne-Owen on Tuesday and Wednesday with 2 p.m. single games before turning around to host tri-matches again next weekend. Maryville College and Webster University will be in town with Rhodes playing at noon and 2 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
