Box Score Danville, Ky. - If you weren't watching Rhodes College women's soccer take on No. 12- Centre College Sunday, don't let the scoreline fool you. Despite losing 5-1 to the Colonels, the Lynx went toe-to-toe with their conference rival for about 65 minutes until a penalty shot goal turned momentum to the Colonels.
Centre came out firing but Lynx sophomore goalkeeper
Abby Roevens made four saves in the first 15 minutes including three in a span of three minutes to help keel the Colonels scoreless for 37 minutes. A cross was punched away from the goal but the Colonels were in the middle of the box for the rebound and first goal of the game. Roevens finished the first half with five saves.
Rhodes' offense came out hard in the second half, pressuring the Colonels continuously for 10 minutes, finally resulting in a goal to tie the game. The Lynx earned the first corner just three minutes into the second half before getting a shot off in the 54th minute. In the next minute,
Sarah DiLuzio pressured the Centre's into making a bad pass from midfield which gave the Lynx a throw-in opportunity. DiLuzio ran the throw-in down, got past her defender, lightly kicked the ball into the box, turning another defender around, then tapped it once more past another oncoming defender. By this time there were two Colonel defenders and their goalkeeper directly in front of the freshman who left-footed the ball between everyone into the center of the goal to tie the game.
Four minutes later Centre would score the game-winner before they were awarded a penalty shot. Centre gained all momentum after going up 3-1 on that shot in the 67th minute. The Lynx made one more shot in the half as Roevens totaled five saves in the second half as well.
Centre remains undefeated on the season at 15-0. The Lynx are now 8-5 overall.
The Lynx are at home for their final three regular season games, beginning with Oglethorpe on Friday, October 18.
