Memphis, Tenn. - It was a slow start, but the Rhodes men's lacrosse team escaped twice, once from the weather and once from Birmingham-Southern to advance to the 2018 Southern Athletic Association Tournament Championship.
With the forecast calling for rain most of the day, the weather stayed East of Rhodes, allowing the Lynx and Panthers to compete in sun during the semifinal round.
Rhodes led 2-0 after the first period before BSC went on a 4-2 run for a tied game at halftime. Rhodes busted out with five goals in the third period to lead 9-6 headed into the final frame.
Steven Yowan scored first in the fourth period to put the Lynx up by four goals before BSC rattled off three consecutive goals.
Ryan Marasco lasered a shot to the upper right corner to put Rhodes up by two, but BSC's Braden McCombs answered with the exact same shot for his second straight goal. Teammate Davis Thompson then tied the game with 1:57 left in regulation.
During overtime,
J.J. Hoots won the faceoff for Rhodes but
Tyler Milwit's shot attempt hit the post and went out of bounds, allowing BSC to take possession. McCombs then turned the ball over after he went through the crease and Milwit took advantage, netting the game-winner with 1:25 left in overtime.
During the game, senior defender
Henry Hasbrouck scored his first career goal while fellow senior Yowan had a breakout game at midfield. He finished with two goals on three shots and a career-high 11 ground balls.
Cameron Link saved 14 shots in goal for the Lynx.
Rhodes will host No. 3-seeded Sewanee in the 2018 SAA Men's Lacrosse Tournament Championship game on Saturday, April 28th at 1 p.m.
