Memphis - Three runs in the second inning jump-started a 5-3 victory over Birmingham-Southern College for Rhodes baseball who is now 18-10 overall and 10-3 in the Southern Athletic Association. The win is the sixth in a row for the Lynx who are the first to reach 10 conference wins within the league.
Rhodes finished the second inning on a double play as Tyler Hamel flew out to left field. A.J. Hunt thought the ball would get down for the Panthers and was all the way at second before returning to first base.
Brady John threw the ball to
Nick Bosma at first who immediately threw the ball to
Jon Michael Lauck at second base for the double play as Hunt had already touched the base and failed to re-tag before heading back to first base.Â
Two Panther errors in the bottom half of the inning aided the Lynx who scored three runs, two off a
Levi Greenberg single up the middle. The Lynx then took a 4-0 lead after
Jacob Telli led the third inning off with a walk. He stole second and finally crossed home after
Ryan Palermo also singled up the middle.Â
BSC earned two runs in the fifth but the Lynx took one back when Greenberg hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom half of the inning.Â
The Lynx led 5-2 in the seventh when first baseman
Nick Bosma was hit in the head with a pitch and not allowed to continue playing in the game. BSC got out of the inning on a pickoff at second base. With Bosma out of the game, starting pitcher
Jack Mercer stayed on the mound for Rhodes and picked up his fourth win of the year after BSC finished with a sacrifice fly in the eighth. Mercer threw 117 pitches and faced 26 batters.Â
Rhodes and BSC will square off Saturday with a doubleheader starting at noon at Stauffer Field.Â
