Memphis - Rhodes vs. Centre baseball, originally scheduled to be played in Danville, Ky. came to Memphis this weekend due to cold temperatures and snow at Centre. The Lynx, who will be playing all weekend as the designated visiting team, led 12-0 in the bottom of the seventh before ultimately defeating the Colonels 18-3 in eight innings.
Two fielding errors in the outfield helped Rhodes score four runs in the first inning. With runners on first and third with two outs in the fourth,
Paul Giacomazzi took off for second as
Brady John held his ground between third and home. Centre's catcher opted to try and go for John as Giacomazzi rounded second and stopped at third base. John was headed back to third base and just before he stepped on the bag, Giacomazzi headed back to second base. John then took off for home and the errant throw by Centre's second baseman allowed both runners to score and take a 6-0 lead.
An additional run in the sixth, followed by five runs in the seventh gave the Lynx a 12-0 lead.
Jack Mercer pitched 6.2 innings of work and held Centre scoreless for six innings before he was replaced by
Tom Coggins. Centre avoided the shutout on a bases-clearing double by Parker Selin in the bottom of the seventh. Coggins ended the innings by catching a line drive right back to him and he pumped up his teammates walking back to the dugout.
The Lynx ensured the shortened game as five pinch hitters entered the game and Rhodes scored six runs on four hits for the final 18-3 score. Centre also pinch hit multiple players in the bottom of the eighth, but grounded into a double play to end the game.
Giacomazzi finished the day three-of-four with two walks and two RBI while also crossing the plate four times.
John Medich,
Will Heurtin and
Jacob Telli all doubled.
Zac Lange tallied three RBI on three hits.
The doubleheader Saturday before Rhodes and Centre will begin at noon. With Rites of Spring on campus, fans should plan for more traffic and delays around campus.
