Memphis - Rhodes baseball held their home opener on a cloudy and cold Tuesday afternoon as they squared off against the LeMoyne-Owen College Magicians.
Just as the bottom of the first inning was about to get underway, rain began to fall, bringing with it colder temperatures and less grip on the ball. During the game, more throws than usual flew past their target as did runners sliding past the base they tried to steal.
The Magicians scored in the second after a double, single and throwing error, to which the Lynx answered in the bottom half of the inning.
Will Hunt singled and stole his way to third and then scored on a wild pitch. LeMoyne-Owen though they took a 2-1 lead in the third on a sacrifice fly but the Caleem Serrant was called out for leaving third base early, negating the run. In the bottom half of the inning,
Brady John singled and also stole his way to third but was left stranded after Emari Mills struck out two Lynx to end the inning.
Alex Garrett came in to pitch for Rhodes in the fifth and began with two strikeouts and ended the half inning on a pickoff. The Lynx crossed six runs in the bottom of the fifth on three hits, three walks, a hit by pitch and two wild pitches.
Rhodes led 7-2 when LeMoyne-Owen scored three runs but a five-run eighth inning for the Lynx sealed the victory.
Garrett earned the win while Hunt,
John Medich and
Jacob Telli each doubled. John finished with three stolen bases while Hunt and
Nick Bosma each tallied two runs batted in. Bosma played center field while
Paul Giacomazzi took a day to rest an injury.
Rhodes is traveling this weekend for the Huntingdon Firehouse Classic, but returns to Memphis to host Christian Brothers University on Feb. 14th at 2 p.m.
