Memphis - Rhodes College women's basketball remains unbeaten after their 52-45 victory over Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology (RHIT) Tuesday night. The Fightin' Engineers move to 1-2 on the season.
After Rose-Hulman's defense kept the Lynx from getting any open looks immediately after the game started, the visitor's 8-0 lead was quickly erased when Rhodes closed out the first quarter on an 18-point run. Freshman
Kiera Downey improved that lead to 12 points after driving to the layup and drawing a foul to open the second quarter. The Lynx led 29-19 at halftime before taking a 16-point lead in the third quarter which was achieved in part on back-to-back three's and a free throw from freshman
Alli Mayeux.
Rhodes led 41-28 headed into the final frame, but RHIT didn't let up. The Lynx led 45-31 before the Indiana squad secured a 10-2 run to pull within six points, forcing head coach
Lauren Sumski to call a timeout with four minutes to play. After an
Allie Young free throw,
Alyssa Owens grabbed a missed three-point opportunity for RHIT, and passed it up court for a fast-break layup by Downey to give Rhodes a nine-point lead. Four unanswered RHIT points had Lynx fans on edge with 1:51 to play. RHIT earned two free throws with 1:07 left, but missed both, and after grabbing the offensive board, turned the ball over with 49 seconds remaining. Rhodes'
Lindsey Whiteside secured the final two points on free throws with 26 seconds left in the game.
Downey led the Lynx with 13 points (5-9), four assists and a block. Mayeux also scored double-digit points (10), shooting three-of-six from long range. Young grabbed eight points, four rebounds and three assists on 23 minutes while fellow senior
Moriah Muhammad grabbed nine boards in 16 and a half minutes to go along with her eight points.
They Lynx shot 38.1% from the floor (16-42) and 83.3% from the charity stripe, missing three of 18 attempts. Rose-Hulman made only eight of their 20 free throws, but shot 39.5% in the field (17-43). Both teams were even in rebounding with Rhodes tallying one more (28-27) while Rose-Hulman committed just one more turnover than the Lynx (17-16).
Rhodes will not compete over the Thanksgiving holiday, and will return to action with three games in three days. The Lynx will play neutral-site games against Southwestern and Texas Luthern Nov. 30-Dec. 1, before returning to Mallory Gymnasium to host Austin College on Sunday, Dec. 2 at noon.
