Memphis - Rhodes College women's basketball defeated the University of the Ozarks 83-73 Thursday night to open the 2018-19 season. The win for the Lynx drops the Eagles to 0-3 on the year.
Rhodes held a two-point lead headed into halftime after the each team hovered around 40% accuracy in the field. Ozarks tallied 11 free throws in the first half, missing just one shot while Rhodes made 10-of-17 attempts.
The Lynx opened the third quarter red-hot, going on an eight-point run to lead by 12 points (54-42) mid-way through the third quarter. The Eagles responded by scoring 10 straight points including back-to-back three pointer's to pull within two with two minutes left in the frame. Moriah Muhammad scored a fastbreak layup to give Rhodes their largest lead of the game (80-64) with 1:40 to play. Their 16-point advantage was soon erased by the Eagles who forced four Lynx turnovers before running out of time. The Lynx made seven of nine field goals in the fourth quarter while junior
Alyssa Owens made both three-point attempts. Rhodes finished with 13 turnovers in the second half. Ozarks capitalized on Rhodes' 20 turnovers by scoring 24 points.
In the game, Rhodes held Ozarks under 20 points during each quarter. The Lynx shot 50% in the field, scoring 26 field goals and connecting on six three-pointers, four of which came from Owens. The Lynx also went 24-of-39 from the free throw line, for a 61.5% accuracy.
Senior
Allie Young led the game with 23 points and eight rebounds, six of which came from offensive boards. She and
Lindsey Whiteside both tallied four assists while Whiteside scored all five shot attempts, including two treys. She also missed just one of seven free throw attempts and brought down seven rebounds (six defensive). Owens finished the game with 14 points, five rebounds and three assists.
The Lynx will look ahead to the Rhodes Classic this weekend when Ozarks travels back to Memphis as will Bluffton University and Fontbonne University. Rhodes will host Bluffton at 5 p.m. on Saturday, followed by Fontbonne at 4 p.m. on Sunday.
