Football falls to Berry in SAA opener

Mount Berry, Ga. - Rhodes College football was handed a 34-13 loss at Berry College to open Southern Athletic Association play. The Lynx are now 1-2 on the year and return to Memphis for the next two weeks.

While Rhodes was held scoreless in the first and third quarters, Berry scored on their opening drive. The Lynx committed three fumbles during the game while quarterback PJ Settles completed 19 of 28 passing attempts for 272 yards. His longest pass of the game was a 29-yard completion to Josh Loud. He also made a 26-yard completion to Josh Lucas. Loud led the game in receiving with 139 yards. Lucas averaged 27.8 yards on kickoff returns including a 39-yard return near the end of the third quarter. Micah Battle returned one kickoff for 27 yards. 

Rhodes cut Berry's lead to 14-7 in the second quarter after eight rushes and three passes. Settles rushed for a yard to score Rhodes' first touchdown of the game. Alex Chavez rushed for three yards to score for the Lynx in the fourth quarter. The two-point conversion was no good, eding Rhodes' scoring against the Vikings.

Defensively, Sam McLain earned a sack while D'On Coofer tallied two sacks on the day for the Lynx. 

For Berry, Tate Badcock completed a 69-yard pass to Mason Kinsey to give Berry a 24-7 advantage in the third quarter. 

Rhodes will host Birmingham Southern College at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 23. It's the first mid-day contest at home for the Lynx who are also hosting Parents and Family Weekend Sept. 23-24.
