MOUNT BERRY, Ga. - The Rhodes softball team got excellent efforts from their pitching staff all afternoon, but eventually fell to No. 3 Berry by the score of 5-0 and 4-3 (9) on Saturday afternoon.
The Vikings, who are currently 31-2 overall and 13-0 in the SAA, are one of the best teams in the nation with the combination of great hitting and strong pitching. However, the Lynx held Berry and nearly came away with a huge win.
In the first game, junior
Allison Long pitched six complete, allowing only one run through five innings. However, a four spot for Berry in the sixth, all unearned, proved to be costly as the Vikings pulled away for the win.
Long pitched six complete, allowing one earned run and walking only two. Rhodes was held to only three hits from junior
Caroline Sutton, junior
Kirsten Samuels, and sophomore
Kendall Henry.
The Lynx responded well at the plate in game two as Sutton drove in a run and Rhodes took advantage of Viking miscues to take a 3-2 lead after two complete.
Freshman
Shannon Tierney got the start, only going two innings, but sophomore
Bri Maniscalco was outstanding in relief, pitching 6.1 innings and allowing two runs off six hits to go with two strikeouts.Â
Berry eventually tied it in the fifth and were able to push ahead the game winner in extras for the 4-3 win.
Sophomore
Jill Healy was 3-for-4 with a run scored while Sutton was 1-for-3 with a doubles and run scored. Senior
Christine Hume had the only over hit, finishing 1-for-4.
Rhodes moves to 20-16 overall and 8-6 in the SAA, looking to salvage one from the Vikings tomorrow afternoon. Rhodes and Berry are set to square off on Sunday at 12 PM.
