JACKSON, Miss. - The Rhodes College softball team picked up a key victory over Millsaps on Sunday afternoon, not only salvaging a game in the series, but staying within striking distance of No. 2 in the SAA.
After four innings of scoreless ball thanks to great pitching, especially form junior
Allison Long of Rhodes, the Lynx got on the board first as sophomore
Karrah Flores stepped to the plate and belted a home run for a 2-0 lead.
Millsaps responded with a two run home run of their own in the bottom half of the sixth to tie things up at two as the game moved into extra innings.
In the extra frame, both teams were kept in check until the 10th inning when sophomore
Kirsten Samuels brought a run home on a fly ball to left. However, the Majors answered with a run in the bottom of the 10th to extend the game.
The Lynx responded with another run in the top of the 11th as sophomore
Kendall Henry smashed a double to right center, scoring one for the 4-3 lead. Sophomore
Bri Maniscalco finished the Majors off in the bottom of the 11th to earn her 10th win of the season.
Long pitched 3.2 innings, allowing no runs and only two hits. Maniscalco pitched the final 7.1 innings, allowing only two earned runs on eight hits and doing a nice job keeping the Major bats in check and earning huge outs in key situations.
Offensively, Flores finished 3-for-4 with the long ball including two RBI and a run scored. Junior
Caroline Sutton was 2-for-4 with a walk while senior
Christine Hume and Henry each had a double. Freshman
Olivia Jackson had the only other hit to go with a run.
Rhodes earned their 20th win of the season, going to 20-14 and 8-4 in the SAA. The Lynx will have a tough task at hand next weekend as they travel to Mount Berry for a three game series against the No. 1 team in the nation, the Berry Vikings. First pitch of the three game series begins next Saturday at 12 PM ET.
