MEMPHIS - The Rhodes College baseball team, who already clinched the No. 2 seed with a win over Centre yesterday afternoon, split with the Colonels on Sunday afternoon to claim the series including a huge 2-1 win in the rubber match.
The Colonels, who were not hit a day ago by
Blake Glauben, finally got some offense going in the first game of the day, scoring three in the first and adding another run in the second to take a 4-0 lead.
RBIs from senior
Zac Lange and freshman
Paul Giacomazzi, along with senior
Ryan Olive scoring on a wild pitch, cut the deficit down to 4-3.
However, Centre added runs in the fourth and seventh innings to make it a 6-3 game. Senior
Bill Munson added a RBI single in the ninth with the bases loaded, but it was not enough as Rhodes fell short, 6-4.
Senior
Bennett Notestine finished 3-for-5 while Munson was 2-for-4 with a RBI. Olive, junior
Levi Greenberg, and freshman
Jon Michael Lauck each added a hit and a run in the game.
Sophomore
Nick Bosma took the loss on the mound, but senior
Jackson Lourie pitched two solid innings while freshman
Nathan Mirochnick had four strikeouts in two innings. Sophomore
Ben South also pitched an inning of work.
In the second game, it quickly turned into a pitcher's duel between junior
Nick Ferngren and Jordan Short of Centre. Ferngren started the game by striking out six of the first seven batters in only two innings of work.
However, Centre pushed one across in the fifth to take a 1-0 lead and look as though they were going to sneak out of Memphis with a series win in the shortened seven inning game.
Both
Chris Winter and Lange reached base with no outs in the fifth and moved to second and third after a sac bunt by junior
Zach Liebenson. Freshman
Nick Williams stepped to the plate and perfect placed a base hit into right field, scoring two and putting Rhodes ahead 2-1.
The combination of junior
Will Vance and freshman
John Medich put the game away, earning the final six outs to clinch the series. Medich was credited with a save after pitching 1.1 innings.
Ferngren pitched five complete and struck out eight. Five different Lynx had a hit including the big one from Williams as well as sophomore
Jacob Telli going 1-for-1. Winter, Giacomazzi, and Olive also added a hit.
Rhodes moves to 21-18 overall and ends their conference season at 13-8, claiming the No. 2 seed. They will close their regular season on Wednesday night as they take on Christian Brothers at USA Stadium in Millington at 6:30 PM.
