MEMPHIS - Sophomore catcher
Kendall Henry connected a two run walk off home run in game one to lead the Rhodes College softball team to a 6-5 win over Centre on Friday afternoon. The Lynx would drop the second game 6-2.
Henry gave Rhodes a 2-0 lead in the first inning of game one as she belted a two RBI tripe to left center. Junior
Kirsten Samuels followed with a RBI double as the Lynx took a 3-0 lead after one.
In the second, Centre responded with three runs to tie the game up before senior
Caroline Sutton singled through the left side to drive in another run for a 4-3 lead.Â
Sophomore
Bri Maniscalco slowed the Colonel bats down from there, as her, and the combination of junior
Allison Long kept Rhodes ahead 4-3 through six innings.
However, the Colonels scored two unearned runs in the seventh to move ahead 5-4 as they looked as though they would steal one from the Lynx.Â
Senior
Christine Hume stepped to the plate with one out and ripped a doubled down the left field line to set up Henry, who smashed the long ball to deep left center for the win.
Manisclaco earned the win, pitching six complete and allowing three earned runs to go with two strikeouts. Long pitched one inning of work and allowed only one hit in the outing.
Hume finished 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored while Henry was 2-for-4 with a triple, home run, and three RBIs. Samuels added a 2-for-3 day with a double and RBI while freshman
Kayla Rose was 2-for-4 with a run scored and two stolen bases. Sophomore
Jill Healy added a double and run scored on the day.
In the second game, Centre opened a 2-0 lead after the first and increased that lead to 5-0 thanks to a three run home run. Rhodes got a run back in the fifth and seventh innings, but seven runners left on proved to be costly in the 6-2 loss.
Freshman
Shannon Tierney took the loss, pitching seven complete and allowing four earned runs to go with two strikeouts.
Healy was 3-for-3 with a double and run scored while Rose was 2-for-3 with a RBI. Hume drove in a run as well while sophomore
Karrah Flores was 1-for-1 with a double. Sutton and Tierney also had a hit in the game.
Rhodes moves to 21-18 and 9-8 overall in conference. They close the series with the rubber match against Colonels tomorrow at 12. The Lynx will celebrate Senior Day before the start of the contest, recognizing their three seniors.
