JACKSON, Miss. - The Rhodes College softball team suffered a pair of tough SAA road losses to Millsaps on Saturday afternoon, falling in game one, 8-0 (5), before suffering a heartbreaking 5-4 (10) loss.
In the first game, Rhodes could not solve Kayla Davidson, who held the Lynx to one hit in five innings of work as sophomore
Kendall Henry had the lone hit. Millsaps scored five in the first two innings and added three in the fifth for the 8-0 win.
In the second game, junior
Allison Long threw a gem for the Lynx, holding the Major bats in check and allowing the Lynx to build a lead.
Freshman
Olivia Jackson drove in a run off an error in the fourth for a 1-0 lead while senior
Christine Hume made it a 2-0 game with a RBI single in the fifth. The Lynx extended the lead to 4-0 off a RBI from sophomore
Karrah Flores and a RBI double from sophomore
Jill Healy.
However, the Lynx defense proved to be costly with three errors as Millsaps scored four runs in the seventh, all unearned, to even the score at four. Rhodes had numerous opportunities to take the lead in extras, but eventually fell thanks to another error in the bottom of the 10th, sending a run home and giving the Majors the series.
Long pitched seven complete, allowing no earned runs and only six hits. Sophomore
Bri Maniscalco took her second loss of the day despite a great effort in game two, pitching 2.2 innings and allowing no earned runs to go with two strikeouts. Of the five runs allowed, none of the runs were earned.
Hume finished 3-for-5 with a double, a RBI, and run scored while Long was 2-for-2 with two runs scored. Henry and Healy each had two hits with a double while junior
Kirsten Samuels had a double.Â
Rhodes moves to 19-14 overall and 7-4 in conference play. They conclude the series tomorrow afternoon at 10 AM, needing a win to salvage a game and stay within reach of second place in the conference standings.
