KISSIMMEE, Fla. - The Rhodes College softball team picked up a pair of wins to open their 2017 spring break trip at the Rebel Spring Games near Orlando, defeating Bridgewater 4-3 followed by a 4-0 win over Defiance.
After falling behind 1-0 in the first game, sophomore
Jill Healy drove a run in to tie it while sophomore
Katelynn Bresler scored on a passed ball to take a 2-1 lead.
The Eagles responded with two runs in the fourth inning to move ahead 3-2. In the bottom of the seventh, junior
Caroline Sutton drove in a run on a fielder's choice, but an error by the third baseman scored the game winning run, giving Rhodes the 4-3 victory.
Freshman
Shannon Tierney was 1-for-1 with the game winning run while Bresler scored two runs. Sutton and junior
Kirsten Samuels had the only other hits for the Lynx in the contest.
Tierney also got the win in the circle to move to 5-0, pitching 1.2 innings and allowing only one hit to go with two strikeouts. Junior
Allison Long got the start, pitching 5.1 innings to go with three strikeouts and allowing three runs on five hits.
In the second game, Rhodes scored three runs in the second inning behind a RBI single from sophomore
Karrah Flores and a two RBI single from sophomore
Haley Rath. Bresler made it 4-0 in the fourth as she singled home a run as the Lynx rode the arm of sophomore
Bri Maniscalco to the win.
Maniscalco pitched a complete game shutout, striking out three batters and allowing no runs on only four hits. She improved to 4-4 on the season with the victory.
Rath finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs while Bresler and Flores each had RBIs. Samules and freshman
Olivia Jackson were each 1-for-3 while Samuels and Bresler along with freshmen
Kayla Rose and
Anna Kula each scored a run.
Rhodes runs their record to 11-8 on the season and return to the field tomorrow morning with another doubleheader, opening the day with Montclair State at 8 AM ET followed by a 10:15 AM ET game against Simpson.
