Henry's Late Hit, Long's Relief Pitching Lead Lynx to First Ever Sweep of BSC

MEMPHIS - After stunning BSC with a pair of wins yesterday, the Rhodes College softball team closed out the Panthers on Sunday afternoon to earn their first ever conference sweep.

Though the two teams do not have a long history, playing only since 2009, it was only the second time the Lynx had won a series over BSC and the first time they swept through the Panthers.

BSC took a two run lead in the first thanks to a home run; however, Rhodes got two back in the bottom half as a passed ball scored both Caroline Sutton and Christine Hume to even the score.

Sophomore Bri Maniscalco earned the start and settled in after the first, allowing no more runs or hits, but faced some control problems, as she was just missing her spot, walking five in three innings of work. Maniscalco worked out of a key bases loaded jam in the third to keep the game tied at two.

Junior Allison Long entered the game in relief and proceeded to pitch a nearly flawless four innings, walking only one batter and allowing a hit until two outs in the seventh inning.

Rhodes had some opportunities to take the lead, moving a runner into scoring position in the fourth inning as well as a big double by freshman Olivia Jackson in the fifth. However, they could not get the run across in the fourth and Jackson was gunned down trying to extend it to a triple.

In the sixth with one out, Hume led the inning off with a single followed by sophomore Kendall Henry lacing a double over the left fielder's head and all the way to the wall, scoring Hume and taking a 3-2 lead.

Despite allowing one hit, Long closed the door in he seventh inning and got Rhodes to 3-0 in the SAA and 9-8 overall.

Henry finished 2-for-3 on the day with her second straight game winning RBI while Hume was 1-for-2 with two runs scored. Both Sutton and Jackson were 1-for-3 as well.

The Lynx pitching staff limited BSC's high powered offense to three hits on the afternoon.

Rhodes hits the road for their spring break trip in Kissimmee, Fla. They open things up on Tuesday with an 8 AM ET matchup with Bridgewater followed by Defiance at 10:15 AM.
