MEMPHIS - The Rhodes College baseball team looked great in the first game of the series against Berry, taking a 10-1 win before the bats cooled down and the Vikings walked away with a 2-1 (7) win in game two.
The Lynx rode the arm of senior
Blake Glauben in game one along with timely hitting for the dominant win. Glauben (1-2) went seven complete, allowing one run on three hits and striking out eight batters.
Freshman Jake Medich provided a perfect inning of work while freshman
Nathan Mirochnick added an inning of solid work as well, allowing one hit.
Rhodes took a 2-0 lead in the first behind a two RBI single from senior
Ryan Olive. The lead increased to 4-0 in the third as freshman
Jon Michael Lauck looped a single into left center.
Olive picked up his second hit of the game in the fifth, scoring a run and putting Rhodes ahead 5-1.
After Berry picked on up in the sixth, the Lynx used the long ball in the bottom half to put the game away. Sophomore
Chris Winter hit a solo shot to get things rolling while senior
Bill Munson blasted a grand slam for the 10-1 lead.
Rhodes used their excellent staff to close the game and earn the key conference win.
Munson finished 1-for-3 with the long ball, four RBIs, and two runs scored while Olive was 2-for-6 with three RBIs. Lauck had a pair of hits and two RBIs while freshman
Paul Giacomazzi was 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Winter was 1-for-2 with a home run and two runs scored.
The second contest saw runs come at a premium, though Rhodes looked as though they were going to take their hitting momentum into the second game as an infield single by senior
Bennett Notestine would score Giacomazzi for the 1-0 lead.
However, a two run home run by Berry in the third inning gave them a 2-1 lead, and excellent pitching from the Vikings was enough for them to hold on for the 2-1 lead in seven innings.Â
Junior
Jack Mercer was excellent, pitching seven complete and allowing six hits to go with a strikeout. However, the one long ball proved to be costly as he was saddled with the loss.Â
Sophomore
Jacob Telli went 2-for-2 on the day while Giacomazzi and Notestine had the only other hits for the Lynx in the contest.
Rhodes moves to 12-12 and 5-3 in the SAA, currently sitting in third. The Lynx will face the Vikings in the rubber match tomorrow afternoon scheduled for 12 PM, weather permitting.Â
