MEMPHIS - The Rhodes College softball team returned to Southern Athletic Association play on Saturday afternoon at home, earning a split against the Hendrix Warriors, winning 10-5 in game one before falling 10-3.
In the first contest, the Warriors jumped all over the Lynx thanks in part to a two run bomb to take a 3-0 lead. Rhodes got one back in first thanks to a stolen base from junior
Kirsten Samuels that scored senior
Christine Hume and one in the second on a RBI double from sophomore
Katelynn Bresler.Â
After Hendrix scored again to go ahead 4-2 in the third, Rhodes got one more back, again on base running, as Samuels stole third and scored on a throwing error from the catcher to cut the deficit to 4-3.
The Lynx finally exploded in the fourth inning, scoring four runs as sophomore
Jill Healy and Hume each drove in a run while junior
Allison Long singled two home to make it a 7-4 game.
Hume added a two RBI double in the fifth to make it 9-4 and eventually scored on aggressive base running thanks to another throwing error as Rhodes finished the contest off with a 10-5 come-from-behind win.
After a slow start, sophomore
Bri Maniscalco settled in nicely, pitching a complete game to move to 8-5, allowing seven hits off only four earned runs and a strikeout.
Hume finished 3-for-4 with two doubles, three RBIs, and three runs scored while Healy was 1-for-2 with a RBI and a run scored. Bresler went 2-for-3 with a double, triple, and a RBI and run scored while Long drove in a pair.
Rhodes was aggressive on the base paths, stealing eight bases including three from Samuels and two from Hume.
In the second game, Rhodes took an early 1-0 lead thanks to a RBI single from sophomore
Kendall Henry, but two in the third and four in the fourth gave Hendrix a commanding 6-1 lead.Â
Bresler tried to get some of it back on a two run bomb in the fifth, but the Warriors tacked on one in the sixth and three in the seventh for the 10-3 win.
Long took the loss, pitching 4.1 while freshman
Shannon Tierney pitched the final 2.2 innings. Samuels finished 2-for-3 on the day while freshman
Kayla Rose was 2-for-4 with a run scored. Bresler also finished with a two hit game including the two run homer.Â
Rhodes moves to 16-11 overall and 4-1 in conference play. They will take on Hendrix in the rubber match tomorrow afternoon at 12 PM from the Lynx softball field.
