Lynx Baseball Earns Split with Millsaps in Par of Wild Contests

MEMPHIS - The Rhodes College baseball team split with the Millsaps Majors in Southern Athletic Association play on Saturday afternoon, falling 9-6 in 10 innings before bouncing back for an 8-6 win in seven.

A two run first inning put the Majors ahead early on, but Rhodes responded with a pair of runs in the third thanks in part to an error by Millsaps and a RBI single from senior Ryan Olive.

Rhodes exploded four three runs in the third thanks to a suicide squeeze from senior Zac Lange and a two RBI double from freshman Paul Giacomazzi as the Lynx moved ahead 5-2 after four.

The Majors responded by scoring two in the fifth before taking the lead in the sixth with a pair runs. Rhodes tied the game at six in the bottom half of the sixth thanks to a RBI double from sophomore Jon Michael Lauck.

Neither team could get anything going in the final three innings thanks to excellent pitching on the Rhodes side from senior Blake Glauben.

The Lynx loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth, but Millsaps was able to get out of the inning unscathed and force extras.

From there, Millsaps scored three runs in the 10th thanks to two errors on the Lynx side and held the Rhodes bats in check as the Majors picked up the win.

Glauben took a tough loss, pitching 3.2 innings and allowing no earned runs on two hits, striking out six. Freshman Jacob Dubs got the start, going 5.2 innings and striking out four while freshman Trey Sledge pitching the final 0.2 innings, staying perfect.

Freshman Ryan Palermo went 2-for-3 with two runs scored while Olive was 2-for-5 with a RBI. Giacomazzi finished 1-for-3 with a run scored and two RBIs.

In game two, the Lynx jumped all over the Majors thanks to a seven run second inning.

After loading the bases, junior Zach Liebenson drove in a run via a walk while Giacomazzi followed with a two RBI double for a 3-0 lead. Sophomore Brady John made it 5-0 with a two RBI single while Olive drove in one on a RBI single. Sophomore Nick Bosma topped the inning off with a RBI double to give Rhodees a 7-0 lead.

The Lynx made it 8-0 in the third as freshman John Medich belted a homer over the left field wall.

Millsaps began to creep back into the game, scoring one in the fourth, two in the fifth, and three in the sixth to make it an 8-6 game. The Majors got two on with one out in the bottom of the seven, but senior Jackson Lourie closed the door with a 4-6-3 double play to end the game and earn the save.

Freshman Alex Garrett earned his first win of his career, pitching five complete and allowed three earned runs on six hits. Sophomore Matt Dale added an inning of work while Lourie earned his third save of the year.

Medich went 2-for-3 with the long ball and two runs scored while John was 2-for-4 with a double, two RBIs, and a run scored. Giacomazzi drove in a pair while Olive, Bosma, and sophomore Chris Winter all had a hit.

Rhodes moves to 9-11 overall and 3-2 in the SAA and will take on the Majors in the rubber match tomorrow afternoon at 12 PM from Stauffer Field.
